Andrew Moore
Designer & Gardener

Nature and gardens run deep in my family. As a teenager I remember cycling to my grandparents’ house on summer afternoons to help in their garden. Wherever we lived – a military life is never static – my mum always created a garden and made it thrive.

Over the years, I’ve lived and worked in some of the harshest environments on earth, first as a soldier and later as a humanitarian. Whenever I had time, I grew things: Bottle trees (Adenium socotranum) in Yemen; roses in Afghanistan; bananas in Cambodia.

Across continents, I’ve seen how gardening can be a universal act of hope – from people growing tiny gardens in refugee camps to the peace found in rose gardens behind mosques. Sadly I have also seen the devastating impact we are having on our environment.

The scale of environmental loss can feel overwhelming, but I believe something deeply hopeful: the 27 million gardeners across our small island can make a meaningful difference. We can nurture beauty — wild or curated — and restore the places we call home.

This belief sits at the heart of everything I do. It’s why I’m ‘By Nature’s Design’ – creating gardens that work with natural processes, celebrate regeneration and bring joy.
